When things get chippy (for the uninitiated, “chippy” is hockey talk for gradually escalating anger and antagonism on the ice) players aren’t thinking with their heads, they’re operating on basic, animal instincts. Crush, kill, maim.
The threat of a fine or a suspension, however long or expensive, is simply not a deterrent at that point–but getting the tar beat out of you is. It’s another understanding as old as hockey itself–if you play tough guy and pick on a smaller, weaker player (usually a star scorer, because small, weak guys don’t make it onto NHL rosters otherwise) then a REAL tough guy is going to come and make you wish you’d never been born. THAT is a deterrent.
